RV Shipment Jump In October

RV wholesale shipments were reported at 19,100 units in RVIA’s October 2011 survey of manufacturers, ahead of September’s numbers by 12.4% and 15.1% ahead of October 2010 totals.  Total wholesale shipments for the year have climbed to 219,100 units, a four percent increase over the 210,600 units shipped through October 2010.
Gains were recorded in both conventional and fifth wheel travel trailers with other categories even with or slightly less than the totals reported for those categories in October 2010.

On a seasonally adjusted basis, all RV shipments were at an annualized rate of 247,800 units through October this year.  This is in-line with the year-end projection of 247,100 units by Dr. Richard Curtin, director of the Survey of Consumers at the University of Michigan, in the Winter 2011 issue of RV Roadsigns, RVIA’s quarterly shipment forecasting newsletter.

Looking ahead to 2012, Dr. Curtin sees RV shipments sliding by 2.6% percent to 240,600 units, essentially remaining at the stable, moderate shipment totals recorded in 2010 and 2011.

“RV sales will face headwinds in the year ahead, including uncertainty about job and income prospects, stagnate wages, depressed home values, and potential tax increases,” said Curtin. “While these factors will prevent an increase in RV sales, neither will they prompt significant declines. Although consumers will be apprehensive, they will continue to buy RVs.”

New Study Shows RV Vacations Least Expensive

Footbal outside of RV

Despite record-breaking fuel prices, typical RV trips remain the least expensive type of vacation, according to a new study comparing vacation costs.  PKF Consulting, an international consulting firm with expertise in travel and tourism, found that "typical RV family vacations are on average 27 to 61 percent less expensive than other types of vacations studied."  Even factoring in RV ownership and fuel costs, the 2008 study reveals that RV family vacations tend to be significantly less expensive than other types of vacations.

PKF analyzed major costs that would be incurred by a family of four taking eight different types of vacations for three, seven, 10 or 14 days to such popular travel destinations as the Grand Canyon, Cape Cod, and Napa, CA.

Family Having Dinner by RV

OTTAWA -- Today, Go RVing Canada released a major new independent Family Vacation Cost Comparison Study. The study found typical family RV vacations to be up to 75 percent less expensive per day than the other types of trips. Several forms of travel were compared, and in all cases, RV vacations were more economical than other types of travel, regardless of trip duration, distance or region of the country where the vacation took place.

"This study confirms what we have been saying for years now," said Jeff Redmond, chairman of Go RVing Canada. "RV vacations represent the most economical way for families to travel and see the beautiful country that we live in. In today's economic environment, people need to know that RVs represent an adventurous form of travel that is more cost-conscious than any other vacation.
